One such movie that you can see which has a heart-wrenching story is The Pianist. It is the story of a much-admired polish Jewish musician. The name of the musician is Wladyslaw Szpilman. In this movie the Pianist, the musician faces a lot of struggle after being separated from his family during the Second World War. This movie the Pianist was directed by Roman Polanski. This movie was released in the year 2002. One of the best things that you will know about this movie is that the autobiography, The Pianist, inspires it: The Extraordinary True Story of One Mans’ Survival in Warsaw (1939-1945).
About the Pianist –
In The Pianist movie American actor, Adrien Brody plays the lead role. He embarks on a upsetting journey through the Warsaw Ghetto. And, when the Germans have closed the gates of the Ghetto i.e. on 15th November, 1940, the family of Szpilman had sold all their belongings and was hiding in a bleak surrounding. One of the saddest parts in all of these is that they even sell the piano of the Wladyslaw. He survives by playing the piano, at café nowoczesna, a café that is situated in Sienna Street which is mostly visited by the Jewish Elites. He also played Piano in Ghetto’s largest Café i.e. the Sztuka before he lost his loved ones during an Operation Reinhard.
Music Used in the Pianist –
Sad sound tracks were needed to match the themes of the movie which were sombre. So, the composer was Frédéric Chopin. Most of the time Szpilman would share his likeness for Chopin with the listeners, while he is working on air (radio). Several late romantic masterpieces are there that you will see in The Pianist. In addition, most of them are played on the soundtrack album by the Polish classical pianist and who is also a actor i.e. Janusz Olejniczak. He was one of the most apt person fit for the Pianist, being a Chopin Lover at heart. Also, he was placed in the 6th position in International Chopin Piano Competition, which was held in Warsaw in the year 1970.
Posthumously Released Music –
Besides that, the movie also includes Chopin’s posthumously released Nocturne in C sharp minor, the remarkable Andante spianato et grand polonaise brillante, and his Ballade No.2 in F major. Polish Film Composer (Wojciech Kilar) had penned the Pianist original score. And, in this the memorable piece, ‘Moving to the Ghetto Oct 31, 1940 was awarded
(won) César Award for Best Film Music at France’s 2003 ceremony.
Was the Piano Really Played by Adrien Brody –
To fit into the role of the Pianist, the actor brody made a lot of personal sacrifices, so that he can fit into the role of the resilient Jewish pianist. One of the most remarkable things that you will know about brody is that he left his girlfriend and also started to diet where he lost 30 pounds in weight. His diet consisted of 2 boiled eggs, chicken for lunch, and a small portion of chicken and, or fish including steamed vegetables for dinner. Also, another good thing you will know about the movie is that Polanski made Brody play the piano i.e. practice for 4 hours a day, until he was able to fully manage the master passages from some of Chopin’s finest works.
